Politically Correct???
This article was brought to my attention. I will comment on it below.
First Jell-O, now Santa
OAK LAWN School district considers banning traditions seen as offensive to Muslims
September 28, 2007
BY ANGELA CAPUTO Daily SouthtownSo long, Halloween parade. Farewell, Santa’s gift shop.
The holiday traditions are facing elimination in some Oak Lawn schools this year after complaints that the activities are offensive, particularly to Muslim students.
Final decisions on which of the festivities will be axed will fall to the principals at each of Ridgeland School District 122’s five schools, Supt. Tom Smyth said.Parents expect that the announcement is going to add to the tension that has been building since officials agreed earlier this month to change the lunch menu to exclude items containing pork to accommodate Muslim students. News that Jell-O was struck from the menu caused such a stir that officials have agreed to bring it back. Gelatin is often made with tissue or bones of pigs or other animals.
That controversy now appears to have been been dwarfed by the holiday debate, which became so acrimonious Wednesday that police were called to Columbus Manor School to intervene in a shouting match among parents.
“It’s difficult when you change the school’s culture,” said Columbus Manor Principal Sandy Robertson.
Elizabeth Zahdan, a mother of three District 122 students, says she took her concerns to the school board this month, not because she wanted to do away with the traditions, but rather to make them more inclusive. “I only wanted them modified to represent everyone,” she said.
Nixing them isn’t the response she was looking for. “Now the kids are not being educated about other people,” she said.
There’s just not time in the six-hour school day to celebrate every holiday, said Smyth, who sent the message to principals that they need to “tone down” the activities that he sees as eating too much into instructional time. “We have to think about our purpose,” Smyth said. “Are we about teaching reading, writing and math or for parties or fund-raising during the day?”
Robertson is hoping to strike compromises that will keep traditions alive and be culturally acceptable to all students — nearly half of whom are of Arab descent at Columbus Manor, she says. Fewer than a third of students district wide are of Arab descent, according to Smyth.
Following the example of Lieb Elementary School, Columbus Manor School will exchange the annual Halloween parade for a fall festival next month. The holiday gift bazaars at both schools also will remain, but they’ll likely be moved to the PTA-sponsored after-school winter festival. And Santa’s annual visit probably will be on a Saturday.
I have seen some really stupid things going on in our public schools of late, and I am getting really sick of it. For instance, doing away with kick ball, we can’t have any of our kids getting hurt now can we.
First let me say, I think that different religions should be accommodated to a certain degree. There should be options in food choice for Jewish and Muslim students. The same way that peanuts have been removed in order to keep allergic students safe. But, you can’t discriminate against other students either. If the school in question can’t provide different food choices, then students with special food requirements can bring a bag lunch.
We have seen all kinds of things REMOVED, from the public square because of the ACLU’s war on Christmas. God forbid we have a nativity scene ANYWHERE. But it’s alright to have Muslim stuff or Jewish stuff. How is that any different than Christian stuff??
In my humble opinion, it should be all inclusive or nothing. It seems we have gone with a knee-jerk reaction. We are so concerned with showing understanding to one religion that we have omitted every other religion and I don’t think its right.
We, or they, (the schools amongst others), have gone so politically correct, that it has become ridiculous. A lot of Christian parents don’t like Halloween, but never tried to change the schools decoration or celebration. Same with the Easter bunny, which has absolutely nothing to do with Easter, I have no clue where it even came from.
I can tell you this…Many Christian parents have decided to either home school or place their kids in private Christian schools. INSTEAD, of calling on every school to meet their needs in regards to their religion. Some are trying to revisit prayer in school. Many see the failure of our kids, to be directly associated with removing prayer from school. And as far as what I believe, I have to agree.
There are many other things that have been removed from school which I find beyond explanation. When I was a kid we said the pledge of allegiance everyday. We were taught many patriotic songs that we sang on a daily basis. Patriotism was a big thing. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think that is something that is being taught in our schools anymore.
What is wrong with teaching our kids to be proud of their country?? What is wrong with teaching our children the 10 Commandments?? What is wrong with teaching our children the reason for the season??
We should be sensitive to other people’s religion and needs, but not at the cost of everyone else. If we can’t include every religion, we shouldn’t be including any. It’s the basic principle of fair play.
I’m sure that there will be people who are not understanding what I am trying to say here. It has been my experience so far, that everyone reads with their own personal beliefs in mind, then they see something different than what I am saying.
This country was founded and developed under Judeo/Christian beliefs. I’m sure you have heard that plenty, especially around Christmas. If you pay attention to the news, you can plainly see that there IS a war on Christmas. Based on the fact that we were/are a Christian/Judeo nation…that should be consideration when it comes to Christmas. I for one, am really sick of ‘politically correct’.
It is things like the article above that makes people prejudiced against Islam in general. And you can see what I think of it. When you look at nations that were/are based on being founded and developed under Islam, its plain to see how they base their schools and holidays. Even though we are America and based on freedom and freedom of religion. Why do we need to change what our country was based on, when Muslim country’s don’t??
I would like to ask our Muslim Americans their opinion on this.

If you look at the ACLU, you will find that they don't discriminate against Chrisitianity. There is no "War on Christmas", that was a hoax perpetuated by a member of the far right looking to sell books to a gullible public.
The issue is not the elimination of Christmas. The issue is the exclusion of non-christians. I remember a group requesting that a pentagram be displayed to represent Yule (the holiday behind the origin of Christmas). A few uninformed, illiterate Christians got that banned because they declared it a satanic symbol.
If you read the story, the mother's request was not to have Christmas banned - it was to make the time more inclusive. Children have social studies everyday, why not teach them about the religious observances of all cultures? What is wrong with that?
I am sorry but the public shouldn't be teaching that one religion dominates the others and that is what a Christmas only celebration does.
Last year my son had a holiday party, they had a holiday shop, they and they learned about Christmas traditions, Hannukah traditions, and the traditions of muslims. He wasn't hurt by the knowledge, in fact, he is better for it. PArt of the public education system should include exposing them to different cultures.
I would suggest you read this article about the ACLU's fictional "War on Christmas". It may help clear things up for you.
All that is mentioned above is correct. People can deny it all they want. But just because they deny it does not make them right.
One of my nieces school - a Charter School, told the kids they will not celebrate Christmas in school this year. The students were told they would still have a "Winter Break" but no Christmas. They were also told by their Muslim Principle from Turkey - the US was not founded on Christian values, and they would now get the true history of this country.
Of course I could no way let that go, so I went to this principle in his office with some teachers and we had it out. First he and another teacher tried to lie and say they never said that, but every kid in the class said they did. Then I pointed out we know it is exceptable for muslims to lie to deceive the infidel. Our whole conversation changed then. They did not treat me like someone they could deceive. Everything was laid out on the table.
Home School looks great, the sad thing is 'what about all of the other students that can't be home-schooled for whatever reason. I have talked with other parents of children in this school and they are afraid to even have their names mentioned. What's up with that? What country are we in? I say in this country do not let anyone intimidate you from speaking what you know to be true.
I will stop here. This can go on and on. My question is...What do we as a country do about it?
Do we let this stand?
Really, there's no war on Christmas?? Then why is it that every time I turned around I hear of some group or another that is trying to remove even the word Christmas from the public square. It is no longer alright for Target employee's to say Merry Christmas, or have Salvation Army bell ringer's. Walmart almost when that way but changed when there was a big uproar. It is no longer alright to have a Christmas break, now its a winter break. I have seen plenty of stories on schools who are not allowed to put up anything that has to do with Christmas, but can put up Hannukah stuff (which is fine with me, the Hannukah stuff).
The bottom line is, there is a concerted effort to go overboard with being 'politically correct', to the detriment of our kids. I don't want my kid to be force fed info about the gay life style. Those kind of issues are being addressed at younger and younger ages.
They need to get back to teaching the basic's and leave the morals to the parents. Also, you can go to pretty much any Muslim country and you won't find them trying to 'include' any other faith. But we are suppose to be ok with not allowing guide dogs for the blind in cabs, no alcohol being carried in cabs. Prayer time and rooms in some California schools. Segregated (by sex) teaching of the Quran in public schools (same California school district). The bottom line is this, Muslims want us to be considerate of their religion and their religious needs, but they are the least considerate to ANY BODY elses religion or needs.
I have a Muslim friend who left this answer on my other blog (one of my other blogs, I have 4 that all say the same thing lol):
"I am Muslim. I am 11th generation Canadian. I also have watched the development of "political correctness" as devised by my generation and reached disgust point a few decades ago. Political correctness has also led to our accepting a lot of things we would not otherwise accept. I would definitely include the fact that we are now being force fed acceptance of gays in our lives and everywhere else. That bothers me more to be honest because it definitely effects our society in a different way, yet I am not homophobic, just tired of agendas.
Over the years I watched as my children's school as the "Christmas Emporium" a HUGE deal for the kids, mutated into "Hannukah Christmas Emporium" then "Hannukah, Christmas, Solstice, Kwanza" and so on. This was a school with an open happy mind and ALL were accepted and made part of the texture of the community. No one was told "this insults me". The philosophy was, if you wanted things known, you volunteered to teach others about it!
NOW back to reality and what you speak of. I agree that it is wrong. This is as if I, a vegetarian, went to a friend's house for dinner and told them I was offended by the gravy and meat on their plates and to serve us all cheese instead. I would never be invited to their house again. That is only common sense. What is missing here is common sense and decency."
She is right, there is an agenda and it has gone overboard. I am grateful that my kid is grown. We have kids that don't know how to read, but we want to get off on all kinds of other garbage that has nothing to do with the basic education. There was even a story recently that a number of high school students thought that George Washington fought in WW2 (at least I think that's how it went, it was something this ridiculous though).
I can remember when my son was in the 4th grade, I got called to the school over a book he was reading. It was a book I had read and given to him, he wanted to do a book report on it. It was about a intern and what he faced his first year as a Doctor, I gave it to him, because he has said he wanted to become a Doctor. The school, had called me to COME IN. It turns out that the school talked to the school librarian to find out what the book was about, then call the public library for the same reason, then they called me....It never accured to any of them to read the flap, which told what the book was about.
He wasn't allowed to do a book report on the book, that coming from a school who had one of the biggest remedial reading problems in the state. Obviously, they must have meant the teachers.
The students out there in our public schools who excel, are doing it in spite of the teachers, not because of. That is my personal opinion. I bet that if more parents could afford it, they would be pulling their kids out of public schools right and left. There is a huge group of people who home school, because they are unsatisfied with what is going on in public schools. On my block alone there are 3 families with kids, 2 of them home school. If you want to do the political stuff, maybe you should do something about the lack of learning our kids are doing first. Seriously, we could stand to teach our kids like those of Japan, excelling is not uncommon there, it is expected.
One more thing, if you consider Bill O'Reilly as 'far right', then how do you look at Rush Limbaugh? It appears that you have never watched O'Reilly, at least not very much. How about those on the 'far left', who are trying to buy a President?? Thank goodness that my blog isn't about politics normally, I think I would have a constant state of high blood pressure.
Twana, thanks,
I will be re-posting everything from my other blog here, until it is all up.
I totally agree with you on the school issue. The simple fact is, we can't just sit back and allow this stuff to happen. Parents need to be paying attention to what is going on in school, heck they need to be paying attention to what is going on with their kids period. Personally I think that the parents like you, who found out what was being said, not only confront the person in charge, but make an effort to contact other parents with the information.
It is much harder to get by with things like doing away with jello, when all parents know about it and confront the issue. You have already seen what grassroot politics can accomplish by looking at how the immigration issue was handled. So people should pay attention what is going on in their schools and attend meetings, whether you have a kid in school or not. Take a look at your taxes sometime, you are paying for all your schools, so you should have a say in how they are run. People weren't going to stand for it, and let their voices be heard. That is what we all must do!
I can understand people wanting others to be sensitive to their personal religious beliefs. But it should be fair. If you can't respect and be sensitive to my beliefs than why should I be sensitive to yours. I think that is a fair question that should be asked. Muslims have a nasty habit of being un-accepting of ANY faith, and want everybody to be accepting of theirs. They don't know the concept of do unto others what you would like done unto you.
I have Muslim friends that are not that way, so don't get the wrong idea. You know how I feel about Muslims as a whole, but I am getting tired of this same old line of 'respect me, just me'. It is a common theme anymore, its like dealing with a bunch of spoiled little kids, and that includes our elected 'leaders'.
When it comes to private corporations and there practices of Holiday greetings - its all about the bottom line. Its better to be all-inclusive with "Happy Holidays" than it is to ignore the growing segments of the market. Target, Wal-MArt and other corporations do say "merry christmas" again, however I am not sure if I even care about the empty sentiments of an over-worked, over-stressed retail worker at the holidays. Target is only guilty of eliminating the obnoxious, overbearing Salvation Army ringers for the sake of their customers and also out of fairness to other charities. Instead, Target now donates the money directly to the Salvation Army and the other charities.
The public square issue is easy - represent all in your community or represent none. How hard is that? Why should a pagan tax payer be denied the right to place a pentacle in the town square while they pay for the upkeep on the christian display? There have been towns that have purposefull y taken down their displays because they were told that they should put up a Star of David or a pagan symbol in the same area as the Christian stuff - they would rather have none versus sharing the space.
Just a point to all you Chrisitians who complain about the symbols of other relgions and their Holiday. Do you know how our religion spread? Do you know how it gained so much popularity? It incorporated the traditions, myths and symbols of other religions. It used the holidays of old and worked themn into the religion. Where do you think Christmas and Easter came from - the pagan holidays of Yule and Eostre. If we can't accept new traditions and holidays - we are failing the traditions of Christianity. We are turning people away from us and not welcoming them in....
The food is a bit ridiculous. They need to offer a secondary menu for the muslim kids but punishing the other kids by removing their favorite foods is unfair. What happens in a district with Hindi kids? Is meat completely eliminated or do they get separate cooking areas?
Don't get me started on teachers and their shortcomings. I have a child in the fourth grade that is well above grade level intellectually (he reads at a college level) but he is emotionally at the appropriate age (8-years-old). We have had all kinds of issues with book reports, library access, etc... Some teachers don't know how to teach a child.
